H2Ohio - Ohio's Strategy for Clean Water

The Challenge: The H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program, a joint effort by Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network (LEARN), evaluated nutrient removal in over 40 Ohio wetland restoration projects. Involving over 120 students, technicians, and faculty, the program faced the challenge of long-term data storage and accessibility. Lacking a central repository, crucial data was at risk of being lost due to funding changes, student graduations, and staff turnover, jeopardizing the scientific value of the investment.
The Solution: To overcome this challenge and uphold its guiding principles of Responsible, Open, Sound Science and Building a Foundation for Long-Term Monitoring, the program adopted the EDI repository. EDI provided a robust data archiving, storage, and publication framework external to the state-funded program, guaranteeing long-term data access and preservation.
The Impacts & Outcomes: The integration of the EDI repository has yielded significant impacts and outcomes for the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program:
-
Enhanced Data Sharing and Accessibility: EDI promotes open data sharing with rich metadata, increasing data findability, accessibility, and reuse for broader scientific impact.
-
Proper Attribution and Scientific Career Development: Data packages with DOIs attribute research to the team, program, and funders, supporting the scientific careers of those who contribute.
-
Programmatic Workflows and Reproducible Science: EDI directly links analysis code to data, creating a verifiable chain from raw data to conclusions. This transparency ensures reproducible findings, fostering trust with the public, policymakers, and the scientific community.
-
Long-Term Assessments and Public Trust: EDI's robust infrastructure supports long-term wetland data collection, enabling better assessments and predictions. Its open, verifiable data platform ensures transparency, demonstrating the impact of state investments and maintaining public trust.
