Forecasting Lake and Reservoir Ecosystems

The Challenge: The U.S. National Science Foundation-supported Forecasting Lake And Reservoir Ecosystems (FLARE) project needed a central, reliable hub for openly publishing critical, high-resolution sensor data and predictive models to diverse stakeholders, from scientists to resource managers, to inform water quality management and optimize reservoir operations.
The EDI Solution: FLARE leverages the EDI repository as its central hub for openly publishing and securely archiving data. This enables seamless integration of high-resolution sensor data and predictive models into analytic and forecasting pipelines. FLARE confidently contributes its data to EDI, knowing it will be readily accessible for future research and program evaluations. EDI also facilitates combining FLARE data with internal reservoir sensor data.
The Impact & Outcomes:
-
FLARE's integrated approach provides a single, reliable source of truth for critical data.
-
The project now informs water quality management and services, optimizes reservoir operations for water supply and flood control, and ensures the long-term sustainability of urban water resources.
EDI empowers data-driven decision-making concerning reservoir water management, leading to improvements in water supply reliability and overall water quality.
